See PUBG’s Xbox One and Xbox One X performance issues for yourself

Digital Foundry has released a video that explores the frame-rate issues found in the Xbox One and Xbox One X version of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, and their findings are a more scientific version of what we stated yesterday: The game’s performance isn’t great.

You can watch the video above to see for yourself, complete with impressive frame rate improvements on the Xbox One X version when compared to the entry-level Xbox One. The most powerful console on the market still fails to hit 30 frames per second consistently, however.

Trying to look at the game’s frame rate in any scientific way is next to impossible, however. No matter how many things you try to control, your experience is always going to be somewhat anecdotal.

“With the title tracking gameplay from up to 99 other players, clearly there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that could impact performance and we’re willing to bet that PUBG can be both CPU or GPU-bound at any moment,” the Eurogamer article states. “In order to get accurate metrics from like-for-like scenarios on base and X hardware, we set-up a small squad and played together on the same server. Across one 22 minute game, we noted an average frame-rate of 25.6fps on the base console, rising to 27.6fps on its more powerful 4K-orientated counterpart.”

While the difference in frame rate isn’t that impressive on the Xbox One X, the game is running at a much higher resolution with improved textures and, of course, HDR support. It’s comparable to running the game on a powerful gaming PC, despite the lack of reliable performance.

Or, rather, the Xbox One X version mirrors the performance issues that can also be found in the PC version of the game. Neither version of the game is finished, we had just hoped for better performance on the console release due to the resources Microsoft is throwing at the title. The good news is that, as long as you know what you’re getting into, the game itself remains one of the most enjoyable multiplayer experiences of the year.
